To Mrauk U – The most popular route is up the Kaladan river by private boat (6-7 hours, K100,000) or public ferry. Tours of Myanmar that feature Mrauk U will include a private boat to Mrauk U; these are converted fishing boats that are usually well kitted out with covered areas, a table, refreshements, western toilet and lifebuoys.
Slow ferries to Mrauk U operate Tuesday to Sunday and cost K15,000, leaving Sittwe at 7am and arriving at 1.30pm (stopping service) or 12pm (non-stopping service). There is a fast ferry once a week (K20,000), which leaves Sittwe on Wednesdays at 7am, arriving in Mrauk U at 11am.
To Taunggok – If you are travelling to Ngapali beach and don’t want to take the plane, then it is possible to take a boat to Taunggok, and then a bus or car to Ngapali (or the nearby town of Thandwe). Boats are scheduled to leave at 6am daily, but occasionally they do not run – and schedules are dependent on the weather. Ticket price K18,000-K30,000.
