Getting There

Air

The airport is about 15 minutes from Myitkyina town centre and a taxi should cost no more than K5000; a tuk-tuk will be slightly less.

There are daily buses from Hopin (for Indawgyi Lake) and Katha. However, journey times are long and the buses are basic.

In addition to Mandalay, there are several daily trains to Myitkyina from Hopin (for Indawgyi Lake) (4 hours, K1750 Upper Class); Naba (for Katha) (8 hours) and Shwebo (16 hours).

There are ‘Express’ and ‘Slow’ trains. All rail journeys to and from Myitkyina are slow and bumpy – make sure to take the express!

Boat

There are boats from Bhamo, Katha and Mandalay; cargo boats accommodate passengers in private sleeping berths.

These journeys can be a beautiful and relaxing way to travel, but journey times are very long (taking many days, and over a week from Mandalay) and from December to June services can be affected by low water levels.

It is not currently permitted for foreigners to travel to Myitkyina by boat.
