Meet in Bangkok for a briefing, then familiarise yourself with your bikes by cruising through the streets of Bangkok and past some of the city’s famous attractions; enjoy a sunset on the Chao Phraya River then head off to dinner for some great street food nearby.
Leave Bangkok and head by car to the historic city of Ayutthaya, a place UNESCO World Heritage site was once sacked by the invading Burmese. Cycle through the stupas and chedis, following the river north to Uthai Thani.
Continuing north, witness idyllic scenes of rice paddies and fields along the way to Kamphaeng Phet; another place on the UNESCO World Heritage list that was built in the 14th century to guard the Sukhothai capital against attacks by Burma.
Start early the next morning for a full-day ride through rustic, mountainous terrain, covering paved and dirt roads, up to Lan Sang National Park.
Cycle through Taksinmahrat National Park on your way to the vibrant Muser Tribal Market, then take a car transfer to Mae Sot; you will have the afternoon to explore this border town, with its strong Burmese influences – both in the people who live there and the stupas that you see in the surrounding countryside.
Hpa An is one of the most enchanting and scenic destinations in Myanmar; the flat, lush paddy fields give way to karst limestone mountains that jut out dramatically from the ground. You will cycle around these and explore some of the springs, temples and massive Buddhist caves that can be found in the area. In the evening, feast yourself on the great local food, a mix of Thai-Chinese-Burmese-Karen fusion.
Head south on the easy, flat road to the former British capital of Lower Burma, Mawlamyine. Then known as Moulmein, this quiet, relaxing city is also a fascinatingly diverse place, with churches, mosques and temples to explore.
Next day, take a day trip to the world’s largest reclining Buddha at Mudon, to the south of Mawlamyine, then cycle back to town to watch the sunset from the Kyaik Than Lan Pagoda – to witness the view that inspired Rudyard Kipling’s poem Mandalay. For dinner, wolf down a delicious barbeque from one of the outdoor restaurants that line the Strand Road riverfront at night.
More adventurous mixing of on- and off-road segments today as the journey takes you past rubber plantations, over wooden bridges and through small Karen villages. After breakfast the next day, take a short car transfer before starting cycling on again towards Mount Kyaiktiyo; the only substantial climb of this segment is as you approach of the ‘base camp’ village of Kinpun.
Start the day early to beat the heat and grab a lift on an open-air truck that, mostly full of Buddhist pilgrims, winds its way up the road up to summit of Mount Kyaiktiyo; this are area is considered part of the temple grounds, so cycling up independently is not permitted. At the top, enjoy panoramas of the surrounding mountains and plains below, and admire the wonder of the holy Golden Rock, perched on the mountain peak. Take the truck back down to base camp and cycle on westwards to Bago.
Continue your ride to Yangon, stopping in briefly at Bago, an ancient capital of Myanmar that is host to a large number of impressive pagodas. On arrival in Yangon, rest and freshen up at your hotels and then head over to the magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda for sunset.
Have breakfast at your hotel, or wander the downtown Yangon streets to grab a traditional breakfast of mohinga at a bustling teashop. On your last day, take time to admire the colonial architecture around Pansodan Street in the heart of downtown, or head to Bogyoke Market where you can indulge in some last minute shopping.
