Capital of Myanmar since 2005, Nay Pyi Taw is frequently visited by business people, aid workers and politicians – but less so by tourists. However, its scale and weird emptiness are a sight to behold.
Pyay, one of Myanmar’s many old capitals, is a traditional Irrawaddy riverside town nearby to which you can find the UNESCO World Heritage-listed treasures of Sri Ksetra; Loikaw, in remote Kayah State, hosts beautiful scenery and a wealth of tribal cultures; and the old colonial hill station of Thandaung Gyi can be found nestled in the beautiful Bwihikho mountain range near Taungoo.
